    5. [S84] Obituaries and Death Notices (Reliability: 4).
Funeral article in the Canton (OH) Repository, October 8, 2014: CANTON Former Canton Mayor Richard D. Watkins led by example, family and friends recalled Tuesday afternoon. They gathered at ArnoldFuneral Home to celebrate his life of service, sharing personal stories of his influence in their lives. Watkins, 84, died Friday. "His memory and spirit will live on through all of us here today," the Rev. Dennis Woodruff said. As he led the service, Woodruff described his own experiences with Watkins and invited others to do the same. Those who worked with Watkins during his 32-year political career said he was a man of action. Watkins served on Canton City Council in the 1970s and became a Stark County commissioner in 1981. He remained on the county board until being defeated in the 1988 election. Watkins later returned to city government by defeating Democratic incumbent Mayor Sam Purses in 1991. He was credited Tuesday with benefiting area service agencies and laying the foundation for the Mahoning Road corridor project. During his time as mayor, Watkins also made progress toward revitalizing the city's downtown. He oversaw the construction of several downtown buildings and established the Canton Community Clinic. His grandchildren Tuesday told of a man whose integrity continued in his personal life. Known as "papa," Watkins encouraged a granddaughter to try new experiences, inspiring her to live life as best she could, and a grandson said he left "big shoes to fill." Mourners filled the cushioned and folding chairs placed throughout two rooms of the funeral home, some dabbing their eyes with tissue during the ceremony. It ended with a recording of Watkins' rendition of "Amazing Grace," as the reverend praised Watkins as an accomplished vocalist. A large turnout at the previous day's Masonic service further demonstrated the reach of Watkins' life, Woodruff said. "Richard was loved so very, very much by all," he said. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marlene, and four children, Matt, Tim, June and Malia.
