Notes - Linden normally worked as a railroad conductor. He reported to work to find that he had been improperly bumped from his job for the day (a union error). Because he needed to work, he agreed to serve as a yard brakeman for the day. The switchman that day was a man who union members had complained constantly that he was unsafe (the day prior to this, Linden complained to his wife, saying, "does he have to kill someone to get fired?"). Linden was coupling two cars when the switchman erroneously backed into the front car, causing Linden to be crushed between the cars. He was rushed to the local hospital, suffering from a "badly crushed right side." His right leg was amputated in an effort to save his life, but he died the next day. Family legend has it that, when he died, his picture fell off the wall of his family home (the house was rattled by a passing train).
Linden rode a motorcycle. We know this because, in her baby-book, it is noted that his niece, Joyce Buchtel, made this sound at the age of 27 months: "Ding ding - Brrrrr." It was further noted that this was the sound of Uncle Linden's motorcycle.
