Notes |
Fought in both the Civil War and the Mexican War. In the Mexican War he served, as a Private, in Company B, 15th Infantry Regiment, serving under General Winfield Scott in Mexico. During the Mexican War, he was severely injured, brought back to the US and mustered out of the service. In the Civil War, he served in the 16th Regiment, Ohio Infantry; his beginning rank was Wagoner, and his final rank was Private.
From an article on his death: A fatal accident occurred at the steam portable saw mill, owned by A. Jolliff and J. Rupley, in Cedar Valley, about four miles northwest of Wooster, by which Peterson Lowrey lost his life. The accident happened a little after 7 O'clock A.M. on Tuesday. The deceased and David Syitler were the only persons in the mill at the time, and were running a 26-inch bus saw, sawing slabsfor fuel for the engine. The saw was moving rapidly, and the moving showed 70 pounds of steam. It is surprising to know that the saw was cracked, and that in this condition it had been used for some time. While running at this rapid rate, and with a small slab on the frame, the saw bursted, and about one-third of it struck Lowrey, cutting him open from his forehead down to his heart, completely burying itself, the teeth protruding from his back. Spitler was knocked down by the concussion, but not injured; he rallied in a few moments, and gave the alarm. The family of the deceased living nearby, was also notified. The broken piece of saw was also removed and the remains taken to the house and prepared for burial. Mr. Lowery was a hardworking man, and his sudden death has left a large family ill-prepared to meet the severities of the winter. He was a soldier in the Mexican War and also a member of the 16th Ohio during the rebellion.
