    • Letter to the editor, The Progress, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, written by Clifford's son, Melvin on March 4, 1997:

      To the Editor: Last week, (Feb. 16-22), Clifford Lingle was told that the van he rode three times a week to his kidney dialysis treatment was no longer available to him, saying he was too disabled to get on and off the van. The van is sponsored by Community Action solely for dialysis patients of Dr. Sanjeev Anand at the Vivra Dialysis Company at DuBois Hospital. 
      DuBois Hospital was contacted. They informed Clifford Lingle it is their policy that patients must get themselves in'and out of the hospital under their own power. Next, he called Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging to use their new Faith in Action Transportation (FIAT) van which was donated to them to "serve the elderly and disabled persons in the county to get to their medical appointments and stops that aid in their recuperation." Again, told he was too disabled. Community Action and Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging and DuBois Hospital were all made aware that if Clifford Lingle could not get to his dialysis treatments, he would be dead in one week. He had no other affordable way to get there. 
      Clifford Lingle died Tuesday, Feb. 25,1997, at the age of 77. It is with the deepest concern for the welfare of those other senior citizens and their families facingthis same situation that I am writing this article to apprise you of this discrimination of Clearfield's elderly disabled. 
      I hold no one responsible for my father's fate, since apathy, greed and ignorance are not crimes. Discrimination is! 
      I feel these agencies are not honoring their obligations, and their directors and the Clearfield County Commissioners need reprimanded for their discrimination policies ... or simply update the vans to accommodate wheelchair service for these citizens. Let's take care of our elderly Americans. We're next!

      The Progress, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, February 26, 1997: 

      WOODLAND - Clifford P. Lingle, 77, of Woodland RD, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, at his residence. Born Nov. 25, 1919, in Shawville, he was a son of Warren and Maggie (Livingston) Lingle. Mr. Lingle was owner and operator of Lingle Trucking Co., Woodland. He was a member of Shawville United Methodist Church and servedas a trustee of the church. Mr. Lingle was formerly president of the Shawville Cemetery Association. On July 27,1940, he wed Cora S. (Stevens) Lingle, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Melvin G. Lingle of Clearfield and Sherry Appleton of Berwick; two grandsons, Matthew Lingle and Daniel Appleton; and a brother, Benson H. of Frenchville RD. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Madeline Williams, Lois Sayers, Georgia Knepp and Elizabeth Gross; four brothers, Donald, Scott,  Ralph and Burton; and a infant sister, Susan Lingle. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family at The Bennett and Houser Funeral Home Inc., Clearfield, with the Rev. Robert H. VanNatta officiating. Interment will be in Bradford Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Shawville United Methodist Church, Box 162, Shawville, Pa. 16873.
