    • From Somerset Co. Genealogical Quarterly Sept 1987, Vol 5, No 3, "THE PETERSON FAMILY", by Fred Sisser, III, a professional genealogist; Wm. Peterson's "Ancestors and Descendants of Garrett Peterson and Nancy Smock" 1987 Gateway Press, Library of Congress Card Number 87-81052:
Dutch Patronymic system – Gerbrandt took the first name of his father, Claes and added an en for his surname.
Gerbrandt Claesen (Claesz) was baptized New York Dutch Church 4, April 1649. Gerbrandt married Marritje Claes (Cos) from Gemonepau 25 Aug 1674. Gerbrandt Claesen and at least 3 of his brothers removed to New Jersey. Of his life, we know that in 1681, he was listed as a member of the Bergen Dutch Church. In 1682, Capt. Gerbrandt Clawson was appointed as one of several commissioners of the highways, Bergen Co. Gov. Leisler's permission given to Gerbrandt Claesen, 25 Jan 1689/90, of Gemonepau, to purchase of the Indians a certain piece of land upon the Hudson River in Dutches (Dutchess— now Putnam) county. Gerbrandt Claesen elected to the Gen. Assembly of New Jersey as a rep. from Bergen Co., 16 Sep 1692, 10 Nov 1694 and 2 Dec 1695. On 6 Dec 1699, Gerbrandt Claesen purchased of George Willocks land at Pequannock NJ on which many of his descendants afterward lived. He also signed the Remonstrance of 1700. This was a petition of the inhabitants of E. Jersey to the King of England decrying the acts of the Proprietors and asking for the appointment of a competent governor…Gerbrandt Claesen and Marritje Claes had nine children mentioned in his Will proved in NYC 22 April 1708. Their children were: PIETER baptized at the New York Dutch Church 21 Apr 1675 (our direct line ancestor), Claes, Herpert, Myndert (1) (died young), Neeltje, Annetje, Cornelis, Meyndert (2), Marritje and Gerbrandt.

Genealogical History of Hudson and Bergen Counties New Jersey:
THE GARRABRANT FAMILY, the later members of which are numerous in the western part of Bergen and Hudson Counties, claim descent from Gerbrand Claesen, a Dutch emigrant, who, at one time, had much influence over the early affairs of Bergen. Claesen was from Amsterdam, and was at Bergen probably two or three years before lie married Maritie, only daughter of Claes Pietersen Cos, which was August 25, 1674. He became a large property owner and held many official positions. In 1689 he obtained the permission of Governor Leisler to purchase a tract of land now in Putnam County, N. Y., and, on December 6, 1699, he purchased of George Willocks an extensive tract of land on the Pequanonck River, then in Bergen County. His issue was nine children: Peter, Claes, Herpert, Cornelia, Metje, Cornelius, Maria, Gerrebrand, and Mindert. Some of these remained at Bergen, where their descendants still live, while others settled on their father's lands on the Pequanonck River, whence their issue spread over Bergen and Passaic Counties.
