  • Notes
    • On July 28, 1911, Cletus Willaman was executed by the state of Ohio, via the electric chair, for the murder of his father-in-law, Warren Koons. He had, in fact, also murdered his father-in-law's wife, Elizabeth Borroway Koons, but that act was not included in the indictment against him. The murders occurred on April 6, 1910 in the couple's bedroom at 521 Virginia Avenue in Canton in the middle of the night. His father-in-law was a wealthy member of Canton, Ohio society. A few weeks prior to the murder, Koons refused Cletus's request for funds that would allow Cletus, his wife, Lottie, and their son to move to Montana. The state contended that Cletus murdered the couple so that Cletus's wife would inherit half the estate. The state also felt, but could not bring up in trial, that Cletus also tried to kill the couple's son so that Cletus's wife would inherit the entire estate. Lottie was the daughter of Warren Koons and his first wife, Anna Bush Koons.Cletus's defense was that he was insane.Cletus was a first cousin to Rosetta Braucher, who married Alfred Andrew Buchtel. The head persecutor was Charles Krichbaum (who later became a judge), who was a second cousin to Alfred Andrew Buchtel. The assistant prosecutor was a Mister Pontius, who was almost certainly related to Alfred Andrew Buchtel, and one of Cletus's two defense attorneys was a Mister Braucher, who was almost certainly related to Cletus. The headline on the front page of the Canton Repository, on July 28, read 'Willaman goes to the execution smiling; Slayer's last words were Jesus, Be Merciful.'
